Performance Evaluation of DBA Algorithms with QoS in Protected Super-EPON Access Networks using a Dedicated Protection Ring Architecture

This paper studies the performance of dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithms, with quality of service (QoS) support, appropriate to be used in a super Ethernet passive optical network (Super-EPON). By using an amplified double-fiber ring structure, the network architecture provides protection to the feeder section of the E-PONs. The behavior, in both service and protection states, of the medium access control (MAC) scheduling algorithms is evaluated in terms of mean/maximum packet delays, mean bit rate per optical network unit (ONU), time-slot occupation efficiency, and mean cycle duration.
